HOFFMANN EITLE is further expanding its high-tech patent practice with the appointment of Sofie McPherson as a partner. She will be based in the firm’s London office. The move strengthens the firm’s electrical engineering and digital technologies practice group as HOFFMANN EITLE continues to invest heavily in technology-focused patent work and further broadening its position in UPC-related disputes.

Sofie will play a key role in reinforcing the firm’s business development efforts in the US, while also contributing to the expansion of its expertise in digital life sciences, bioinformatics and connected healthcare technologies. Her addition supports the broader strategic push at HOFFMANN EITLE to deepen its offering across both the patent attorney and legal advisory sides, ensuring a fully integrated service for clients operating in complex, technology-driven markets.

Dominik Scheible, senior partner in the firm’s digital technologies group, outlines:

“From our very first conversations, it was clear that Sofie would be a strong fit for HOFFMANN EITLE. She brings impressive experience, a genuine feel for high-tech innovation and exactly the kind of collaborative mindset that is so important for building integrated teams of patent attorneys and lawyers.”

In recent months, the firm has significantly strengthened its patent litigation capabilities in technology-heavy sectors. In Munich, Thomas Gniadek joined to help boost the litigation practice towards the high-tech-area, particularly mobile communications and SEP disputes. In Düsseldorf, the arrivals of two further Attorneys-at-Law Jonas Smeets and Fabian Saupe further expanded the firm’s litigation team and reinforced its presence in contentious proceedings. Sofie adds depth on the patent attorney side in the same fields that are becoming increasingly relevant in UPC and cross-border disputes.

Sofie is a Chartered UK and European Patent Attorney with over 10 years’ post-qualification experience. She has previously worked as a patent attorney not only in private practice, but also in-house with Ericsson. This background provides her with valuable insight into the commercial and strategic priorities of a major industry player, especially in the area of standard essential patents.

Her practice focuses on medical technologies, digital health and bioinformatics, but also includes substantial experience in software, artificial intelligence, sensors, wireless communication technologies and connected medical ecosystems. She has worked on medical applications such as diagnostics, treatments and training, as well as related areas including mobile apps, IoT, cyber-security, blockchain, gaming and GUIs. A significant portion her work also relates to telecommunications and SEP matters, placing her at the intersection of life sciences digitalization and classical electronics.

The appointment reflects HOFFMANN EITLE’s continued focus on aligning its capabilities with evolving client demand in key technology sectors, including telecommunications, AI, digital health and connected devices.
